Adding new users to your WordPress site is simple and essential for growing your website, whether for team collaboration or community engagement. Here’s how you can do it:
Step 1: Log in to Your WordPress Admin Dashboard #
- Go to your website’s login page:
yourwebsite.com/wp-admin
. - Enter your username and password to access the admin dashboard.
Step 2: Navigate to the ‘Users’ Section #
- From the left-hand sidebar, hover over Users.
- Click Add New from the dropdown menu.
Step 3: Enter User Information #
- Username: Enter a unique username for the new user. This will be their login name.
- Email: Provide a valid email address for the user. WordPress sends important notifications here.
- First Name & Last Name (optional): You can include the user’s first and last name, but it’s not required.
- Website (optional): If the user has a website, you can add the link here.
Step 4: Set a Password #
- WordPress will generate a secure password for the new user. You can either use this or manually set a custom password.
- To show the password and edit it, click the “Show Password” button.
- Make sure to save or share the password with the user.
Step 5: Assign a Role #
- Select the appropriate User Role for the new user from the dropdown menu:
- Subscriber: Can only manage their profile.
- Contributor: Can write and manage their own posts but needs approval to publish.
- Author: Can publish and manage their own posts.
- Editor: Can publish and manage all posts, including those of other users.
- Administrator: Has full control of the website.
Step 6: Notify the User #
- Check the box that says “Send User Notification” if you want WordPress to email the login details to the new user.
Step 7: Click ‘Add New User’ #
- Once all the details are set, click the Add New User button to create the account.
Step 8 (Optional): Managing and Editing User Profiles #
- To manage or edit a user’s profile, navigate back to the Users section and click All Users.
- Hover over the username you want to edit, and click Edit.
- Here you can update the user’s role, reset passwords, or change personal details.
