Solutions Journalism: A Fresh Approach to Reporting

In a recent presentation facilitated by Shirley Govender, independent community media publisher, journalists were introduced to the concept of solutions journalism – a rigorous, evidence-based approach to reporting on responses to social problems.

The presentation, held on July 17, 2024, in partnership with the Solutions Journalism Network, highlighted the growing need for this type of reporting. With 39% of people globally avoiding news due to its negativity, solutions journalism offers a refreshing alternative.

Four key pillars were outlined:

  1. Focus on a response to a social problem
  2. Provide evidence of effectiveness
  3. Offer insights and lessons learned
  4. Address limitations and context
