With less money available for journalism and more competition for grants, over 100 African journalists joined a hands-on webinar on 26 March 2025. The session was hosted by the Fraymedia Foundation in partnership with the Association of Independent Publishers (AIP) and focused on how to improve your chances of getting funding.
What the Experts Shared
The webinar was led by AIP’s Kate Skinner and featured advice from funders and experienced journalists:
- Nadine Hoffman (International Women’s Media Foundation):
- Warned about ongoing funding cuts, especially from the U.S.
- Said journalists must stay clear and focused in their proposals.
- Emphasised knowing your audience and being consistent when applying.
- Bongiwe Tutu (Africa-China Reporting Project):
- Stressed that relevance is key—your project must match what the funder is looking for.
- Methodology matters—show how you’ll do the work, step by step.
- A strong, clear story angle can help you stand out.
- Anton Harber (Henry Nxumalo Foundation):
- Advised applicants to “think like a funder”.
- Research properly, be clear and detailed, and don’t be shy to ask for help or advice.
Other Funding Avenues
The webinar also discussed the growing interest in corporate partnerships—but highlighted the need for caution, as editorial independence must remain protected.
Key Takeaways
- Prepare thoroughly before applying.
- Make your story and project easy to understand.
- Learn from others—peer support can be a powerful tool.
This session was a reminder that despite shrinking budgets, well-prepared and passionate journalists still have a chance to succeed—especially when they support each other and adapt to the changing landscape.
