In a recent presentation facilitated by Shirley Govender, independent community media publisher, journalists were introduced to the concept of solutions journalism – a rigorous, evidence-based approach to reporting on responses to social problems.
The presentation, held on July 17, 2024, in partnership with the Solutions Journalism Network, highlighted the growing need for this type of reporting. With 39% of people globally avoiding news due to its negativity, solutions journalism offers a refreshing alternative.
Four key pillars were outlined:
- Focus on a response to a social problem
- Provide evidence of effectiveness
- Offer insights and lessons learned
- Address limitations and context
The approach distinguishes itself from advocacy by not overclaiming, presenting multiple perspectives, and focusing on ideas rather than specific organizations or policies.

Govender emphasized the importance of evidence in solutions stories, whether quantitative or qualitative, and provided guidance on vetting and presenting data responsibly.
The presentation also covered practical tips for finding and reporting solutions stories across various media formats, including radio, print, and television. Visuals were highlighted as a crucial component, with advice on selecting images that avoid perpetuating stereotypes and harmful narratives.
As newsrooms worldwide grapple with audience fatigue from negative news cycles, solutions journalism presents an opportunity to engage readers while maintaining journalistic integrity and accountability.
