The Association of Independent Publishers (AIP) is a national organisation dedicated to advancing the interests of grassroots independent print media in South Africa. Representing over 200 small, locally owned media outlets across the country, including newspapers, magazines, newsletters, and online publications, AIP distinguishes itself from mainstream media owned by larger groups like Media24, Independent, Caxton, and Arena.
AIP member publications serve primarily rural and disadvantaged communities, publishing in diverse languages and covering a wide range of interests. Some operate from grassroots settings such as informal settlements or converted spaces, while others are larger operations with multiple staff and offices.
Geographically, AIP spans communities from rural Cofimvaba to urban areas like Bonteheuwel and Heideveld on the Cape Flats, and from Makhado to Gansbaai, Mangaung to Jozini, and beyond.
The AIP promotes true media diversity and pluralism by representing print and online media in all 11 of South Africa’s official languages. The organisation’s objectives include fostering ownership and access to media by historically disadvantaged communities and indigenous language and cultural groups.
