The Role of Idikelethu Newspaper in Community Development
Community newspapers have a mandate to provide their audiences with relevant information that supports community development. To achieve this, they must focus on the specific interests and needs of the communities they serve. This study highlights how the Idikelethu newspaper, based in Alice, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, contributes to community development.
Using a qualitative research approach and qualitative content analysis, the study examined Idikelethu newspaper issues from January to December 2021. The analysis focused on whether the newspaper covered stories related to community development. The findings revealed that Idikelethu frequently addresses topics such as education, sports, road construction, unemployment, agriculture, crime, and poverty.
These findings suggest that Idikelethu newspaper plays a significant role in the development of its community. By regularly covering development-related issues, the newspaper helps inform and engage residents on important matters that impact their lives.
