About

Mission of the project

Supporting community media sustainability in the digital environment

Community Media Support Services is an initiative powered by the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) and implemented by MeD8 Media.

SANEF, South Africa’s leading media freedom advocacy body, brings together editors and senior journalists from print, broadcast, and digital media at national, regional, and community levels, as well as media trainers and academics from top journalism schools. Its vision is to uphold quality and ethical journalism, promote diversity in media representation, champion freedom of expression, and secure the long-term sustainability of the profession.

Through this partnership, SANEF recognises the vital role that community media play in safeguarding media diversity. However, many community newsrooms face tough realities — limited resources, shrinking revenues, and difficulty in adapting to digital platforms needed for future growth.

To respond to these challenges, SANEF commissioned MeD8 Media to implement Community Media Support Services. MeD8 Media successfully rolled out the programme, strengthening digital capacity, diversifying revenue options, and building sustainability models for community media outlets. The initiative continues under MeD8 Media, ensuring that community media are better equipped to thrive in a changing media landscape.
